① Evangelion Crossing Expo

If you’re a fan of the long-beloved anime hit Evangelion, it doesn’t get much bigger than this unique event. A meeting place for fans and “crossing grounds” for all things Evangelion, the Eva Crossing Expo is largely an exhibition featuring close to 4,000 exhibits, including impressive life-size figures of some of the series’ most popular characters, an enormous Unit-01, and a weighty 100kg Spear of Longinus. Of course, that’s not all – fans can also check out the expo’s special cafe themed around some of Evangelion’s most famous lines, which has a menu full of colorful drinks and snacks like a “I Musn’t Run Away” Parfait, with a cutout of Shinji standing atop a mountain of purple ice cream. Enjoy the selection of amazing Evangelion creations and memorabilia, and shop the huge selection of exclusive limited-edition Evangelion merchandise before you leave!

② Jujutsu Kaisen x Tokyo Skytree

This autumn, fans of the anime Jujutsu Kaisen can meet their favorite characters high in the sky above Tokyo thanks to this collaboration with Tokyo Skytree! Shoot into the air in an elevator so fast it feels like it might be powered by cursed energy, and enter a new domain (too forced?) on the Tembo Galleria, 450 meters above ground. The viewing deck is decorated with Jujutsu Kaisen displays and photo spots where you can take pictures with Gojo (and other characters, if you really want), scenes from the anime are being screened on the windows of the Tembo Deck, and you can splurge on cute Jujutsu Kaisen themed cafe treats before shopping the selection of exclusive original merchandise!

③ Eevee Friends Pokemon Afternoon Tea

Move aside Pikachu, this Pokemon-themed afternoon tea is all about Eevee and the Eevee-lutions! Decorated with plenty of cute pointy ears and dashes of color inspired by Eevee’s many evolved forms, this decadent afternoon tea set includes seven different desserts, three savory bites, a selection of teas, and even optional drinks like aromatic floral sodas and lattes with printed Eevee latte art. Start with the Pokeball macarons before digging into spicy chicken resembling Flareon’s fire, an ethereal Vaporeon-themed jelly dessert, a cake inspired by Jolteon’s angry needles of lightning, a blueberry-blackcurrant cheesecake inspired by the elegant lavender tones of Espeon, or any number of other fun themed treats. Make sure to look around and enjoy the Pokemon-themed decorations as well, while you’re there!

Half a lifetime ago I came to Japan for a semester abroad... and I never left. I guess I really like the place! I spent my first few years in Japan living in the middle of nowhere, so I'd love to hear your Tokyo recommendations via Japan's social media accounts!
