It’s the end of an era… and the start of a new one!
明けましておめでとうございます!!!
Japan follows the Chinese zodiac, and 2019 is the Year of the Pig (Boar). 2019 just isn't any Year of the Boar though, it is the "Golden Year of the Pig (Boar)" (己亥年), which many say is to bring you a great year of fortunes. Being the Golden Year of the Pig (Boar) isn't the only thing to happen in 2019, it is also the final year of Japan's Heisei era. With that, what sort of things can Japan expect to change if any?
What Sort of Things to Expect in Japan 2019
Japan's Heisei era ends in April 2019. Why? Because the Emperor of Japan Akihito has decided to step down, being the first Emperor to do that in some 200 years (most emperors continue until they pass away, then their son or grandson is next in line).
If only that was the only thing to change in Japan, but Prime Minister Abe and his party have decided to make a change to the tax starting in October 2019. Currently, Japan's consumption tax is 8%, but rather than just raising it to 10%, they made a weird and confusing system to where in some cases you can still get 8%.
