The Apothecary Diaries season two is coming soon, which means the dynamic duo – the curious cat Maomao and the enigmatic beauty Jinshi, will soon be back on screens! The second season of The Apothecary Diaries is set to arrive soon, with the Japanese premiere date of January 10, 2025 promising fresh episodes for the fresh new year. Fans of Japanese pop will be excited to learn that the new season will also feature a fresh opening theme song from one of Japan’s biggest stars, Rira Ikuta of Yoasabi. The song’s title, “Hyakka Ryoran” (百花繚乱), can mean “a riot of flowers,” or “a crowd of beautiful women,” or even “a profusion of blooming talents,” giving fans plenty to look forward to in the upcoming episodes.

For those who haven’t yet immersed themselves in the seductive world of The Apothecary Diaries, also known by its Japanese title Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (薬屋のひとりごと), the series is an anime adaptation of a light novel series by Natsu Hyuuga. The first season, which aired from October 2023 to March 2024, spans 24 episodes and follows the adventures of Maomao, a brilliant young apothecary who finds herself unexpectedly serving in the royal palace, in a setting inspired by feudal China. Maomao’s sharp wit is what drives the story, helping to attract a wide fanbase to what might at first seem like a simple shoujo anime. Drawn into solving various palace mysteries (often unwillingly) due to her clever deductions, the story follows the twists and turns of Maomao’s palace life alongside other palace servants, concubines, royalty, and the handsome (and suspiciously elegant) eunuch, Jinshi

In Japan, the Apothecary Diaries is officially set to air every Friday at 11:00 PM as part of Nippon TV’s Friday Anime Night block, beginning on the evening of January 10, 2025. The second season is expected to follow the pattern set by the first, with a six-month run from January to June 2025, for a total of 24 episodes. With promotional teaser images and trailers for season two starting to roll out in earnest, excitement is building for the upcoming mysteries.
Full details for foreign streaming services have yet to be announced, but Crunchyroll is on the forefront of the trend, already announcing plans to begin streaming The Apothecary Diaries’ second season in January 2025. It looks like non-Japanese fans of the show will have no trouble staying up to date on their favorite pair of palace oddities!
