Manga & Anime Events in Tokyo
For manga and anime fans growing up outside of Japan, sometimes the wide world of Japanese comics and cartoons, particularly the width and breadth of what is widely available, is the very first thing that draws us in. But the true vastness of that variety can be hard to comprehend until the first time you walk into a Japanese bookstore and see the huge shelves dedicated only to the latest, hottest manga series. Fortunately, that means that when you come to Japan, there are always plenty of unique manga and anime-themed events to check out! Fill out the schedule of your next trip to Tokyo, or just find something fun to do on the weekend, with these June 2024 events hand-picked for your enjoyment!
① Hana to Yume 50th Anniversary Exhibition

If you grew up immersed in the romance and fantasy of Japanese shoujo manga, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve read at least one manga that was originally published in the manga magazine Hana to Yume. This cutesy publication (Hana to Yume literally means “Flowers and Dreams”) has been a major player in the Japanese manga scene for half a century, putting out popular series on a regular basis since 1974, and some of the most famous names have found popularity all over the world: Fruits Basket, Skip Beat!, and Kamisama Kiss are just a few of the big ones. This exhibition gives shoujo manga fans a chance to celebrate 50 years of Hana to Yume, from the publication process to the final manga series that make it onto the magazine’s pages. Check it out to immerse yourself into the worlds (and take pictures) of some of Hana to Yume’s most popular manga series, see original illustrations from throughout the decades, and even get a behind-the-scenes look at how the artists and editors work to make Hana to Yume a success!

Check out this escape room for a unique chance to join forces with Denji, Aki, and Power and work together to take down a devil!

③ The Road to City Hunter: 40th Anniversary Special Manga Exhibition

Fans of retro Shounen Jump won’t want to miss this exhibition, which focuses on the legendary manga and anime City Hunter by Tsukasa Hojo. An icon of the ’80s shounen manga scene, City Hunter is all about private eyes investigating (and doing hits) in the seedy underbelly of Tokyo’s bustling Shinjuku neighborhood, and the series has gone on to find success as an anime and multiple live-action movies (including a new Netflix adaptation).
This year, to celebrate four whole decades of City Hunter fandom, author and artist Tsukasa Hojo is exhibiting a huge collection of original works from the manga’s creation, including dozens of illustrations, original manga panels, and promotional paintings. There’s also a City Hunter pop-up cafe (only accessible to exhibition-goers) that offers a rotating menu with items like “Ryo’s Mokkori Omurice” and an Angel Heart “Glass Heart” drink! If you’re a fan of this old-school classic, this event offers a rare chance to see more of City Hunter while you’re in the very city where Ryo Saeba does his work!
The Road to City Hunter: 40th Anniversary Special Manga Exhibition (北条司展 the road to『CITY HUNTER』40th anniversary 2025)
Event Dates: April 17, 2024 – June 23, 2024
