Starting Strong with Japanese Favorites

1. Misaki Ichiba (三崎市場)

Restaurants and food courts are often found on the basement floor of Japanese malls and department stores, and JOINUS is no different. This is where you'll find Misaki Ichiba, a shop that specializes in "kaisen-don" (海鮮丼), or fish and seafood rice bowls!

All of the fish you find here will be delicious, but the star of the show is their fresh raw maguro (tuna), which is caught nearby, and purchased right from the fish markets. The fresh fish's quality is a luxury we don't always find outside of Japan, so it's worth indulging in while you're here, and the hearty chunks make for a satisfying meal.

A bite with a dab of spicy fresh wasabi.

Cans of local tuna for sale. Bring one home for a foodie friend! (500 yen)

The easy to find shopfront.

2. Negishi (ねぎし)

This restaurant specializes in one of Japan's more unusual specialties. Alongside with classic meal sides of rice, pickled vegetables, and soup, Negishi offers entrees of grilled beef tongue! The large grill is situated in an open kitchen, so you can see the chefs at work expertly preparing your meal.

Some travelers avoid beef tongue just because they worry the price will be too high. When you think about it, there is far less tongue-meat available than other beef. Not to worry, though, Negishi makes it easy to sample this tender meat, with reasonable tongue dishes available from about 1,000 yen.

The tender meat is carefully plated, and ready to eat.

Made to order!

They have more common cuts of beef, as well.

3. Hakata Tempura Takao (博多天ぷらたかお)

This tempura joint hails from Fukuoka, on Japan's southern island of Kyushu. Delicately battered and fried to crispy perfection, the tempura here will make your mouth water.

You can certainly get a quick meal of ten-don (天丼), tempura rice bowl, at Hakata Tempura Takao. You'll walk away quite satisfied. But the real treat here is the fresh vegetables and seafood, which can all be ordered one piece at a time. Getting each piece fresh from the hot oil, piping hot and satisfyingly crispy, is a true luxury experience. From around 1,000 yen, a bounty of delicious tempura made with all kinds of ingredients is yours to enjoy.

Staff will carefully prepare each morsel one by one.

Big chunks of fresh vegetables, and lovely pink shrimp.

You can also buy some mentaiko (明太子, spicy red pollock roe) souvenirs to take home and snack on. It’s a Hakata, Fukuoka specialty. (1,080+ yen)

4. Yokohama Nakaya (横浜なかや)

If you've been in Japan for a bit and you want to try something new, this restaurant is all about miso nikomi udon. The dish has a base of miso-flavored stew, a rich and flavorful broth, with a healthy pile of thick udon noodles. Rounded out with vegetables cooked to perfection in the savory broth, it's both very Japanese, and also a little different from what travelers often try on a trip to Japan. You can also opt for kishimen, a similar dish originating from Nagoya, with wider flatter noodles.

The dish itself can be had for an affordable 800 yen, and made into a set with rice and pickled vegetables for an additional cost. You can also order a raw egg along with the dish. If you're thinking "now what do I do with a raw egg on my platter?" they have a few serving suggestions! You can dip each item in the raw egg just before eating, like you might do when eating sukiyaki. You can also mix it into your warm rice, making it the classic Japanese "tamagokake gohen" (卵かけご飯). Or, if you want the egg well-cooked, plop it right into the hot soup! It'll add an extra delicious richness to the soup.

This miso stew is popular with visitors from all over.

If you’re in the mood for something a little less steamy, try their (non-soup) miso noodles.

The Relaxed Atmosphere of JOINUS’s Cafe Eateries

5. Wired Cafe (ワイヤードカフェ)

One look at the interior of this brunch cafe, and you can tell it's a little different from the restaurants we've been talking about so far. Wired Cafe has bold retro furnishings and soft lighting, making it a pretty cool place to chill out when you need a break from all your souvenir shopping. They even have a variety of cocktails to go with their food.

Of course it's a great place to hang out with friends, but it's also a comfortable space to sit alone! Sometimes solo travelers have a hard time finding a dinner spot where it's easy to spend time by themselves, but Wired Cafe is great for that purpose. A variety of magazines, focusing on different topics and kinds of writing, are put on display around the seating area. They're not just for decoration, you're welcome to leaf through them while you're there. There are also plentiful outlets for charging your phone or laptop. (They even carefully curate the music in the cafe to create a cool environment!)

One-plate brunch set, and a cranberry-grapefruit juice. (1,380 yen)

Easy access to outlets for device charging is rare in Japan. Indulge yourself!

6. Nana’s Green Tea

On the third floor of the building, you'll find this green-tea-themed cafe and restaurant. For when you want a simple, light meal, you can try Nana's ochazuke (お茶漬け), a traditional Japanese rice dish that's topped with hot tea! For days when we're feeling a little decadent, they also have parfaits piled with layers of matcha-flavored treats.

This store location also has a special themed concept, which is that it's a ~bamboo forest~. The many bamboo poles arranged around the eating space are really atmospheric! It's themed dining, without the kitsch.

There's also a little souvenir corner inside the cafe, where you can buy Japanese-style gifts to bring home. The most common souvenirs in Japan are always food, so of course Nana's Green Tea has cookies and traditional warabi mochi to give to your friends.

The Shop’s Most Popular Item: Gateau Chocolat Parfait (1,010 yen)

Ochazuke (990+ yen)

Hokkaido (北海道) is the northernmost of the four main islands that make up Japan. The area is famous for Sapporo Beer, plus brewing and distilling in general, along with fantastic snow festivals and breathtaking national parks. Foodies should look for Hokkaido's famous potatoes, cantaloupe, dairy products, soup curry, and miso ramen!

    • Niki, in south-west Hokkaido, is about 30 minutes from Otaru. The small town is rich with natural resources, fresh water, and clean air, making it a thriving center for fruit farms. Cherries, tomatoes, and grapes are all cultivated in the area, and thanks to a growing local wine industry, it's quickly becoming a food and wine hotspot. Together with the neighboring town of Yoichi, it's a noted area for wine tourism.

    • Niseko is about two hours from New Chitose Airport, in the western part of Hokkaido. It's one of Japan's most noted winter resort areas, and a frequent destination for international visitors. That's all because of the super high-quality powder snow, which wins the hearts of beginners and experts alike, bringing them back for repeat visits. That's not all, though, it's also a great place to enjoy Hokkaido's culinary scene and some beautiful onsen (hot springs).

    • Otaru is in western Hokkaido, about 30 minutes from Sapporo Station. The city thrived around its busy harbor in the 19th and 20th centuries thanks to active trade and fishing, and the buildings remaining from that period are still popular attractions, centered around Otaru Canal. With its history as a center of fishing, it's no surprise that the area's fresh sushi is a must-try. Otaru has over 100 sushi shops, quite a few of which are lined up on Sushiya Dori (Sushi Street).

International skiiers are especially fond of Zao Onsen Ski Resort and Gassan Ski Resort, and in recent years visitors have been drawn to the area to see the mystical sight of local frost-covered trees. Some destinations are popular regardless of the season, like Risshakuji Temple, AKA Yamadera, Ginzan Onsen's nostalgic old-fashioned streets, and Zao's Okama Lake, all great for taking pictures. Yamagata is also the place to try Yonezawa beef, one of the top 3 varieties of wagyu beef.

    • Japan's most densely populated area, the Kanto Region (関東地方) includes 7 prefectures: Gunma, Tochigi, Ibaraki, Saitama, Tokyo, Chiba, and Kanagawa, which means it also contains the Tokyo Metropolitan Area. In modern-day Japan, Kanto is the cultural, political, and economic heartland of the country, and each prefecture offers something a little different from its neighbors.

    • Gunma Prefecture is easily accessible from Tokyo, and in addition to the area's popular natural attractions like Oze Marshland and Fukiware Falls, Gunma also has a number of popular hot springs (Kusatsu, Ikaho, Minakami, Shima)―it's even called an Onsen Kingdom. The ski resorts in Niigata and Nagano also draw visitors from around the world, making it a popular winter destination.

    • Nagano Prefecture's popularity starts with a wealth of historic treasures, like Matsumoto Castle, Zenkoji Temple, and Togakushi Shrine, but the highlight might just be the prefecture's natural vistas surrounded by the "Japanese Alps." Nagano's fruit is famous, and there are plenty of places to pick it fresh, and the area is full of hot springs, including Jigokudani Monkey Park―where monkeys take baths as well! Thanks to the construction of the Hokuriku shinkansen line, Nagano is easily reachable from the Tokyo area, adding it to plenty of travel itineraries.
