JR East has big plans for Tokyo, responding to the ever-growing influx of foreign visitors by constructing the speedy new Haneda Airport Access Line, slated to cut through the city and get travelers from the airport to Shinjuku and Tokyo Station in no time!

Japan’s train system is already a marvel for many of the international visitors who arrive in Japan, but this major project from Japan Railways (specifically JR East) will be sure to impress new arrivals as soon as they leave the airport. JR East’s new Haneda Airport Access Line is actually three shinkansen (bullet train) routes in one, planned with the aim of helping international travelers get into central Tokyo and the surrounding areas as quickly as possible, and two of the routes are optomistically looking at a 2031 completion date. The new East Yamanote Route will connect Haneda Airport with Tokyo Station, and thanks to the existance of disused freight tracks connecting some parts of the planned route, full-scale construction is already underway. The Coastal Route (Rinkai Route) will link the airport with Shin-Kiba Station, but JR East has stated that further considerations concerning fares and operations are required before moving on to the next step.

Perhaps even more highly anticipated, the planned West Yamanote Route will connect Haneda Airport with Shinjuku Station, the urban heart of the city and one of Tokyo’s most popular neighborhoods for visiting tourists. This line is in the earliest stages of the three, delayed due to the detailed investigations into tunnel construction methods that JR East needs to complete before launching the project. But passengers flying through Haneda, already the more convenient of Tokyo’s two airports, have a lot to look forward to. The current project plans have the Haneda Airport Access Line set to zip between the airport and central Tokyo in under 20 minutes!
