What Is an Onsen Gastronomy Walking Tour?

This culinary walking tour gives participants a chance to enjoy a wide range of local foods, regional sake, and unusual attractions – from popular tourist spots to seasonal specialties that can only be enjoyed at this time of year. Whether you’re a foodie, a history enthusiast, or an onsen (hot springs) lover, there’s something for everyone!
This walk in the Nasu area of Tochigi prefecture will take you along scenic trails for a relaxing stroll as you listen to the babbling of nearby streams and marvel at the valley views from the suspension bridge. Trace the footsteps of literary greats who once visited the historic Shiobara Onsen area!
Of course, “Gastronomy Walking” is all about food, and the highlights of this walking tour are the delicious local specialties along the way. Savor local cheese made in Nasushiobara (ranked second in Japan in raw milk production), and dishes focused on the flavor of locally grown vegetables. Try salt-grilled rainbow trout fished from the rivers of Tochigi Prefecture, and Nasu’s famous soup yakisoba – usually only available to those willing to wait in long lines. Sample the local craft beer brewed with onsen water, along with a selection of locally produced wine, cider, and apple juice. For dessert, you won’t want to miss Tochigi’s “toteyaki,” an iconic local treat. This tour offers a unique opportunity to taste Tochigi!
Note: During the tour, staff may take photographs or videos of the event, and media outlets may ask to conduct interviews. The rights to any footage, photos, records, and media publications belong to the event organizers and the Onsen Gastronomy Tourism Promotion Organization.
