Tour Mashiko: See the Sights by Bike
Whether you choose to stay over at the Ceramic Art Club or not, renting a bicycle to see the sights in Mashiko is always a good choice. The Moka Railway operates a bike rental right outside Mashiko Station that offers bikes at a reasonable rate of 500 yen per rental! With easy transportation at hand, we’ve got a few fun spots to add to your tour of Mashiko!
Gallery Moegi Jonaizaka: Find the Beauty in Everyday Life
Owned by a fan of traditional crafts and handmade artisan goods, this gallery is all about making the beauty of art part of everyday life, and the proprietor carefully selects and displays the works of Japanese artisans from Mashiko and beyond (including Karin Nakamura!), in solo and group exhibitions, all in the home of Mashiko-yaki. Gallery Moegi is a gathering place for fans of handmade goods in Mashiko and the greater Kanto region, who come to appreciate the beautiful variety of ceramics found around Japan – and it’s sometimes even a venue for unique workshops!

Tonoike Sake Brewery: Mashiko-yaki and a Local Sake Cafe
You can’t enjoy a good bottle of wine to the fullest extent without the right wine glass to sip it from, and when it comes to Japanese sake, Tonoike Sake Brewery might have an inherent advantage by offering its sake in the home of Mashiko-yaki. The cafe within the brewery has a display featuring a selection of Mashiko-yaki pieces, and visitors sampling Tonoike sake can even choose their favorite Mashiko-yaki sake cup to drink out of! For those who worry that a sake tasting will leave them unsteady on their bicycle when leaving the brewery, the cafe also offers coffee instead.

Michi no Eki Mashiko: Tochigi Souvenirs and Green Lawns for Picnicking
A Japanese Michi no Eki is the kind of rest stop you won’t want to miss, and Mashiko’s own Michi no Eki has become a popular stop thanks to the unique local products available inside and the gorgeous grassy fields out back. Despite being a roadside rest stop, Michi no Eki Mashiko is only about 20 minutes out of the city on a bike, making it a convenient destination for those looking to stock up on local treats and fun mementos. Inside the building, shops sell all kinds of local products, from fresh produce to special Mashiko snacks, unique limited-edition Tochigi flavors of some big-name products, and of course handmade crafts and artisan items. There’s even a Mashiko-yaki exhibition area! After choosing some tasty treats to snack on, visitors can borrow a picnic mat and enjoy the verdant grass right behind the building – a perfect way to sit back, relax, and enjoy the Mashiko weather on a sunny fall day!

International skiiers are especially fond of Zao Onsen Ski Resort and Gassan Ski Resort, and in recent years visitors have been drawn to the area to see the mystical sight of local frost-covered trees. Some destinations are popular regardless of the season, like Risshakuji Temple, AKA Yamadera, Ginzan Onsen's nostalgic old-fashioned streets, and Zao's Okama Lake, all great for taking pictures. They say that if you lay eyes on Zenigata Sunae, a huge Kagawa sand painting, you'll never have money troubles ever again.

Plus, it's full of all sorts of destinations for travelers, like trendy shopping centers, and the beautiful nature of Itoshima and Yanagawa.

Kagoshima Prefecture played a major role in Japan's modernization as a backdrop for famous historical figures like samurais Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, who pushed Japan out of the Edo era and into the Meiji. Because of that, Sengan-en Garden is just one of many historical destinations, and when it comes to attractions Kagoshima has plenty: the active volcano of Sakurajima, popular hot springs Ibusuki Onsen and Kirishima Onsen, World Heritage Site Yakushima Island, even what Japan calls the "island closest to heaven," Amami Oshima.
